Turn Your Photos into Easily Shareable Stories

These days if you have a smartphone, you are a photographer. Taking photos has never been easier and smartphones have given us all the opportunity to capture happy moments spent with favourite people in beautiful surroundings. Sharing these moments and memories adds to the joy of it all. There are many quick and creative ways to do that. One of my favourite ways is to create a mini movie out of a few of the best photos taken on any particular occasion.

Probably the quickest and easiest way to do that is to learn to use the Memories feature found on the Photos App on the Iphone. It really is simple to use and once you have learnt to edit and customise the videos you can put together a story from your favourite memories in no time at all. You will then have something fun to share with your family and friends on social media platforms such as Instagram and Facebook. Let me show you how to do it and then give it a try, it’s a great way to while away a rainy afternoon and to curate your photos.

Iphone Memories are automatically created by the Iphone Photos App. Photos taken over a certain period of time or at a certain place or even of the same people are collated by the app into mini movies called memories. You can take these automatically created videos and customise them by choosing your own music, the phots or videos to be included as well as the length of the video.

To get started:

  • Open the Photos app and select For You at the bottom of the screen and then Memories

  • Tap on the memory that you want to open

  • At the top will be the video created by the app, with the images included in the movie below it. Tap to play. The movie will download and then start to play. Tap again to start editing.

  • Below the video you can select a different mood, such as happy, uplifting, chill to suit the content. This will change the preset music and font of the title. You can also choose the duration of your video by choosing between short, medium and long

  • To further customise your movie and really make it your own, select edit in the top right hand corner of the screen. Now you will be able to create your own title, choose the title image, select music from your own collection and choose the duration of the movie as well as which photos to include or leave out

  • Once you are happy with how everything works together, tap done

  • To share your happy moments, tap the share icon to share it via email, Messenger, Whats app, Facebook or Instagram.

  • If you really like it, you can add it to your favourite memories by clicking the blue circle with three dots in it when you first open your memories

I have had so much fun with these mini movies since discovering this feature on the Photos App. My mini movies were a real hit on the last trip we did to Italy, Spain and Portugal as they created a quick, brief, fun overview of our days that were easily shared between us and then with our friends and family afterwards. Friends and family breathed a sigh of relief when they realised that they weren’t going to be subjected to endless photos from our camera roll.

One of my favourite ways to use this is to create mini movies of people who are special to me and then send them to them with a message of appreciation . This is a great way to celebrate those you love on their birthdays. These can also be published on social media if you really want to make them feel loved and appreciated. People movies are made by selecting one of the movies made by the app that includes the person you want to feature. Open it but don’t press play on the video. Rather scroll down until you see the people included in the video, a map showing where the photos were taken, as well as related memories. Click on the person you want to feature and you will get a video of all the photos and videos you have taken of that person over the years. You can then edit it to customise it to your liking. Try it, it’s so heartwarming - a wonderful trip down memory lane with that special person.

One final tip: Live photos and videos really bring these mini movies to life so make sure your camera is set to take live photos and then you will get videos full of movement, laughter and enjoyment. Have fun trying all of this out.
